Just A Long Walk – case study

First-time author James Gibson contacted me about designing his memoir, Just a Long Walk. Before beginning the design process, I asked if the manuscript was complete and professionally edited.* It wasn’t yet, so I recommended that he work with Editwright for editing and book coaching services. Andy Doty and his team guided the manuscript through the editorial process, and many months later the project returned to me for book design.

Professional book design should begin only after a manuscript is finalized and professionally edited.

Exploring Cover Concepts

Gibson provided several photographs from his journey for the cover design. Two images immediately stood out:

  1. A photograph of the author on the John Muir Trail, carrying his gear and looking into the distance.

  2. A peaceful campsite scene featuring Gibson’s tent, illuminated by the warm glow of an orange mountain against a deep blue evening sky and moonlight.

While memoirs often feature the author prominently on the cover, Gibson chose the second image. It was the right decision. The tent photograph feels authentic, calm, and reflective—qualities that invite readers to pause, look closer, and wonder about the story inside. The contrast between the warm mountain tones and cool evening sky creates a striking focal point without feeling overstated.

Typography Choices

For the typography, I selected Adele from Adobe Fonts, a versatile slab serif typeface with warmth, personality, and excellent readability. The family includes 30 styles, making it flexible for both display and supporting text.

To create visual hierarchy, I arranged the title on two lines, emphasizing the word “Walk” for stronger impact and readability, even at thumbnail size. The subtitle and author name are centered horizontally, and the typography is carefully distributed across the cover in balanced sections from top to bottom. The result is a clean, organized composition that complements the photography rather than competing with it.

Publishing and Recognition

Gibson published Just A Long Walk through both Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and IngramSpark and continues to actively market and promote his memoir.

The book received two National Indie Excellence Award Finalist honors in the categories of Best Cover Design and Motivational. To celebrate the recognition, we later updated the cover to include the NIEA gold emblem.

Praise from Editwright

“Readers LOVE this book cover! It’s clean, crisp, sharp, and professional looking, with eye-catching typography on top of an eye-catching photograph, carefully balanced so that neither element distracts from the other. This book has been flying off the shelves at bookstores, and it’s obviously due to Peggy’s design work.”

Final Thoughts

Designing Just A Long Walk was an opportunity to help bring an author’s personal journey to life through thoughtful typography, photography, and layout. It was also a pleasure collaborating with Andy Doty and the Editwright team throughout the process. Successful books are often the result of strong collaboration, and this project was a great example of that.
